About New Exynos Processor for Google
If we take the leaks into consideration, Samsung is making a new chipset using Samsung’s 5nm LPE process. Let’s talk in details, The new Exynos processor has an octa-core setup with two Cortex-A78 CPU cores, two Cortex-A76 CPU cores, and four Cortex-A55 CPU cores. The new Exynos processor is likely to use ARM’s Mali MP20 GPU that is based on Borr(codename based on Norse technology) microarchitecture. Google will be using its own developed Visual Core ISP and NPU instead of Samsung’s ISP and NPU. Last year, Reuters reported that Google is looking for chip designers across various companies like Intel, Nvidia, and Qualcomm that could help in creating Goggle its own chipset so that it would not rely more on vendors like Intel and Qualcomm. Here in Bengaluru, Google also created a team of 16 engineers for the same. It seems like Google has settled with Samsung to design the Exynos Processor for it. If this is true then Google might be using it on its Pixel lineup, Chrome-OS based devices and also for its servers at data centers. According to ETNews, Samsung established a new “Custom SoC” team inside its Device Solutions business this year. The new team is dedicated to making custom chipsets. It is also expected that the team might also be developing chipset for Facebook AR/VR products for the Oculus lineup.
Samsung’s Goals with New Exynos Lineup
Interestingly, some time back there were a lot of talks that raised questions regarding the performance of Exynos processors. There were talks that said that the Exynos processor actually doesn’t perform as good as its Snapdragon counterpart for some models. A petition was also filed online saying that Samsung should only use Qualcomm’s processors for its smartphones lineup. But Samsung said that the talks are false and with the new report it is clear that Samsung isn’t going to work in the Exynos lineup. Samsung’s new Exynos processors are likely to perform better as Samsung is switching to stock ARM CPU cores and abandoning the Mongoose CPU cores. They are also preferring AMD’s Radeon graphics over ARM’s Mali GPUs. Samsung has big plans for Exynos and is planning to become the world’s biggest company for System Semiconductors by the end of this decade.
